WINDOWS   LOGON
CONFIRMATION   BOX

In Windows 95, 98 or Me you may get a logon prompt at startup. If you are the only user this prompt is unnecessary and annoying. If you had it set up for more than one user and want to change it back than this is how to do it either way.
Click Start. Go to Settings. Click Control Panel. Double click Network. Make sure that Windows Logon is selected. Click OK. If you are prompted to restart your computer click No.

Go back to the Control Panel and double click Passwords. Select All users of this computer use the same preferences and desktop settings. Click OK. Reboot your computer. If you never set it up for more than one user than you shouldn't have to do anything else.

If you still get the logon box and are the only user and you never set a password and the name is blank try this. Type in a name. Leave the password area blank. Click OK. Reboot.
If you previously had a password configured then you will need to logon when prompted instead of clicking cancel to set the password to blank. Then Go to the Control Panel and double click Passwords. Click Change Windows Password. Type your old Windows Password. Leave the next two boxes blank. Click OK. Click OK. Reboot.
If you had a password set but can't remember it then you'll have delete or rename your old password files. Click Start. Point to Search or Find and then click For Files or Folders. Type *.pwl in the Named box. Click Local Hard Drives in the Look in box. Press ENTER. Right-click one of the .pwl files. Click Rename. Rename the file with an .old file name extension. Repeat this step for each .pwl file. Reboot your computer.
Try using a combinations of the above steps and remember that rebooting will be needed for them to take effect. For more information I finally found this MKBA152104
