MODEM  STRINGS

powered by FreeFind
Modem Volume: I almost put this one on My Rants Page. My computers modem volume was set at "Wake up the dead loud". Like many computers my volume slider would only allow "on" or "off". Some others have only "on" or "low". "Off" was fine for me but after doing a format the volume slider did nothing. So off I went on a search to adjust the settings another way. Quite simple actually. Set up a modem string. Here's how.
  1. Go to the Control Panel.
  2. Double click the Modems icon. In XP click Phone and Modem, select the modem tab.
  3. Under the General tab click the modem your using to highlite it.
  4. Click Properties.
  5. If your slider gives you what you want adjust it now and OK to close.
  6. If it does not, click the Connection tab.
    XP users ignore this step.
  7. Click the Advanced tab.
  8. In the Extra Settings box type the commands to what you want it to be.
  9. Click OK. Click OK. Click Close.
MODEM VOLUME COMMANDS
AT&F Resets the modem to the default factory settings.
AT&F1 Resets the modem to the secondary default factory settings.
L0 Sets the modem to the lowest volume.
L1 Sets the modem to a low volume.
L2 Sets the modem to a high volume.
L3 Sets the modem to the highest volume.
M0 Turns the modem off completely. (My preferred setting)
M1 Turns the modem sound on.

SPEED UP THE MODEM CONNECTION TIME

You can also add to the string to tell windows not to check for a dial tone when connecting to speed up your connection time. In the extra settings dialog box add the string X3.

Set the dialing speed of the modem or decreases the delay for dialing to increase the speed your modem connects. In the extra settings dialog box add the string S11=40 for maximum speed.
