| MSN (Microsoft) Internet Access Provider--Microsoft General Information--Outlook Express--Hotmail (Now owned by Microsoft)--A few MKBA's (Microsoft Knowledge Based Articles) | |
Set up a manual connection to MSN. The steps at the right are for Windows ME. Other versions of Windows will vary slightly. First things first. If you use MSN you will need to get a connection before you do anything else. So if MSN is your provider you might need a dial up connection. Thier dialup software can become corrupted. Or if you just want to sign up with MSN but don't want to wait for them to send you the installation disk in the mail you can call in to set up your account then set up a manual connection to download the software. Or you can bypass the dialup software altogether and just use a manual connection. You can also use it to dial up your account from any computer anywhere. But you will need the local access number. I once had to tell MSN that this could be done via the internet in order to download the software after setting up an account for a friend. Go figure. I don't even get paid for this. |

This is a great service but MSN makes it hard to find.
But I make it easy. Click here for MSN support |
| The Windows Update Site. Search for and install ALL the critical updates. Recomended Updates are just that. Install only the ones you really need. Driver Updates would be better down loaded from the manufacturers site. | The Catalog Update Site. After using the regular update site to search for updates go to this site. From here you can download them to a file. Then put them on a disk for backup before installing them. See my Backup Page. |
| MSN Messenger for windows. If you have a NET Passport you can use this instant messenger. Both are free. If MSN is your provider or you have a Hotmail account you already have at least one Passport. (you can have as many as you want) | The Download Center. Look for direct downloads of Microsoft products and upgrades you may want or need. Just be sure of what you install. Not every thing new is good. For example I will not upgrade my WMP past the 7.1 version due to their digital rights clause. |

JavaVM
(alternate link)
You need a java program to view many web applications or to do things like play Yahoo games. The problem is due to the legal battles with Sun Microsystems Microsoft no longer offers it as a download nor does
it ship with XP. If you did have it with Windows XP and you installed the Windows Update SP1a then it was removed. If it becomes corrupted and no longer works you can't get it from Microsoft anymore.
You could use Suns java but I find that some web sites still don't work well with it. So if you want to continue using a Java Virtual Machine besides Suns then I suggest you download from one of the few existing sites where you can still get it. Better make a few copies for backup too. This is going the way of the dinosaur. You will need to install version 3805 before installing version 3810 unless you have a version inbetween. For backup purposes download both versions. |
