   SpywareGuard The exact same info as stated in Spywareblaster listed above. And a few other good functions. I think it now has a homepage guard. Read the FAQ if you need the additional files. The reason I don't use it anymore is because the new version uses more of my resources and it duplicates what I already have. But I highly recommend this FREE program.

* Yahoo Companion toolbar now includes an anti spyware tool as well as a popup blocker. See the popup blocker section below.

* StartPage Guard Prevents your homepage and search engines from being changed behind your back by malicious programs that can be installed simply by visiting a web site. I tested this and it works great. I do not suggest that anyone else deliberately test it.

* CWShredder can still remove most of the entries for the Cool Web Search Trojan which can change your homepage and search settings. The developer of this program is no longer updating it as he is using his time to continue his education. Thanks Merijn for your long and hard work on this program. Many other good programs can be found at his site. To download the stand alone version of CWShredder go to InterMute. TrendMicro has now purchased CWSShredder. Download from TrendMicro

* Spider v1.16 Displays and deletes the index dat. files that show the url's of all the web sites you ever visited. The author pulled it from his site but you can still get it at the above link. This program is for pre XP systems. FREE.

* MRU-Blaster Cleans a multitude of "Most recently used" lists. The plugins even allow cleaning of cookies and temporary internet files but allow you to keep the cookies you want. It will even delete the index dat. files that show the url's of all the web sites you ever visited. Another good FREE program from Javacool. I REALLY LIKE THIS PROGRAM.

* 12 Ghosts or 12 Gee are pay utilities and they're not cheap. And Power Gee is even more expensive. I use 12 Ghosts. But now you can get 12-Wash LE, light edition, and 12-popup for FREE. The Pro version of 12-Wash is better but I still recommend either one. I use Pro.

To download individual Ghosts including the two free ones scroll down to the list and click on one of the five download sites. Cover your tracks with 12-Wash. And while your there check out 12-Shredder to delete files permanently. All Ghosts except the FREE ones can be used on a trial basis for FREE.

* Mcafee quickclean is a pay utility that can clean almost everything and has many additional functions. This program can do almost everything to delete spyware and tracking cookies and user files. It can clean the registry. It can shred files so they can't be recovered. And more.

You can also totally wipe your hard drive clean. So be careful. I was even able to uninstall programs that Microsoft said were imbedded so deeply into the Windows operating system that uninstalling was not possible. It did take a lot of work to undo some of the damage it caused however. This program is extremely powerful as well as good so make darn sure you know what your doing before executing certain commands. I use it. I like it.

FREE OR NOT GET ONE NOW * Mcafee and Norton Norton are two of the more common ones. I've only used Mcafee and have found it to work great with no problems on my computer or anyone else's that I personally know. Norton appears to be quite good also on the computers I personally checked. There are many other programs that many people will swear by. I cannot list them all or verify their effectiveness. But I do have my own opinions.

A word of caution: Check Norton's site to make sure you are getting the right version for your operating system.

Since Mcafee and Norton keeps changing their links the above link will only take you to the Mcafee or Norton Store main page. You will have to search for the product. There are a few FREE antivirus programs I found. I have not used them. Below are a few that offer free and not free versions.

   AVG is probably the most used FREE program. But they make it hard to find the free version. Try using their "search" at the top of the page. Enter "avg free".

   Antivir is also good I hear. The FREE version is currently Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic.

   avast! 4 Home Edition is also free. Click on the "downloads" tab at the top of the page to search for it.

* Housecall makes a good online backup scanner and virus removal program. This will help clean up your system after it's been infected but will not give you real time protection. A FREE service from TRENDMICRO. Many other companies also offer a free scan service now. But TrendMicro was one of the first and the one I trust. That's why I also recommend the next program.

   PC-cillin from TRENDMICRO is a full service program but not free. SEPERATOR LINE

FIREWALL PROTECTION
A MUST HAVE LAYER OF PROTECTION THESE DAYS * Sygate Personal Firewall is the one I use. Symantec (Norton) has bought them out and scrapped it. Symantecs firewall is not free. I contacted OldVersion.com about offering it and you can get it there now. It's still FREE but donations are what keeps their site running. Even a dollar or two helps.

    Kerio had a free firewall but Mcafee bought them out. Fortunately Sunbelt Software has acquired the rights and saved it from the junkyard. Download the Sunbelt/Kerio firewall. After thirty days the trial version will revert to the free version.

   ZoneAlarm is one of the most popular. Look for their FREE version.

   Outpost Firewall has a FREE version. SEPERATOR LINE

POPUP STOPPERS THERE ARE MANY. HERE ARE A FEW FREE ONES.    NoAds is my personal choice of a passive popup blocker. It comes with a huge list of popups it will block that can be updated easily. You can add to the list yourself or remove from the list too. Small, easy to use and FREE. I used it before I started using Yahoos. It will even block entire web sites if you want it to. Works with Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and America Online.

   POW! works much like NoAds and I have tested it. Good and it's FREE.

   Pop-Up Stopper has a FREE version but slightly limited in functions.

   PopKi is totally FREE and looks very promising. I definitely need to test this one. Besides I like the site name. Randy's Freeware. Free is good.

   12-Popup is also FREE. Scroll down on the link page to find it. Scroll up on this page to the Security section and see 12Gosts or 12Ghee.

* Yahoo Pop-Up Blocker is now the one I use. It is very poweful and very aggressive. It even blocks popups on Yahoos services and sites. To use it you need to install the Yahoo Companion toolbar which I already use. I have already replaced most of the Windows toolbar with Yahoos for functionality reasons anyway so this was not an issue. The Companion toolbar is fully customizable for placement and display functions. It now has a anti spyware program also.

   Google Toolbar will now stop popups. I like the Google search engine. It's my favorite. But since the search engine loads fast and I don't need or want another toolbar I won't add it. Another option though. Your choice. SEPERATOR LINE

SYSTEM UTILITIES A FEW TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR COMPUTER * Belarc Advisor is a really cool program that will open in a browser window and display a lot of useful information about your computer with clickable links to even more detailed information. Safe, private, printable, small, easy to use and more. FREE FOR HOME USERS.

* EVEREST Home Edition from Lavalys and AIADA32 are two similar programs for displaying computer information. After Lavalys bought out AIADA32 it was discontinued. Soon after they discontinued the FREE Everest Home Edition as well.
Fortunately the older FREE versions of Everest and AIADA32 can still be found at sights like MajorGeeks.

* PC Wizard is like the two programs above. I really like this one too. I was going to save as text and print all the data it could display but cancelled the print because I didn't want 57 pages of very tiny fonts. Too much ink. Scroll way down to the PC Wizard logo then click download below that. Another excellent FREE program for home users.

* OEBackup (by Majik) will backup almost anything in Outlook Express. Never worry about having to reinstall settings or loosing information in Outlook Express. Microsoft Visual Basic 6 SP5 Runtimes may also have to be installed if you don't already have it. The full version has the file included. Both are FREE.

* jv16 Power Tools newest version is NOT free. But it is a good registry cleaner and more. LastFreewareVersion still has an older free version that won't expire

* Tweakui for Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME and NT. Part of Microsofts Power Toys utilities. A very useful tool but also very powerful. Using it wrong can cause major problems. But included in it are some very good tools. Such as rebuilding the shell icon cache. Comes in handy if your icons quit displaying or working properly. Just be careful how you use this good FREE program.
* Tweakui for Windows XP. See above. These power toys are for XP only but also FREE. SEPERATOR LINE

UTILITY PROGRAMS
FUNCTIONAL AND FUN PROGRAMS * MyAlbum is a fun picture viewer and cataloger that has many additional features like slide shows, adding music, converting and resizing of pictures, screen saver for your pictures etc. The file types it supports is limited but it does have some fun features. I'm still using an older version so I'm sure the newer version does even more and it's totally FREE.

* XnView is an excellent program that can serve as a multimedia viewer, file converter, image manipulater, screen capturer and the list goes on and on and on. Go to the site and select your language (English I assume). Then look to the left for XnView to download or see what is does. I like this one and use it a lot. Some of the images on my web site were created with this program and yes it's FREE. And for people like my brother that send me files I can't access or view . I can now.

* IRFANVIEW combines some of the options of MyAlbum and XnView and has some unique functions of it's own. But all three programs will do most anything. I use this a lot and have created images on my web site with it. Where one does some things well another does things better. I like it, use it and it's FREE.

* OpenOffice is full featured alternative to Microsofts Office program. The main difference, it's totally FREE. If you choose to download it you'll wish you had high speed internet access or be prepared to keep a dialup connection active for about six hours. And it is a compressed/zip file so you'll need a program to unzip it if you don't have Windows ME or newer. I have tried it and it works good.

The GIMP is a FREE alternative to PhotoShop or PaintShop. SEPERATOR LINE

These are just some of the programs I use or recommend. I have more links to mostly free programs or freeware web sites. I can not vouch for every program I know of. I can vouch for many of them. If you ask I will try to link you to a good program.
